CAO Information Evening 2016 Maynooth University

CAO experts will be on hand to advise and guide parents, guardians, CAO applicants (including Leaving Certificate students, mature student applicants and Further Education students) and all interested parties about the CAO application process. College of Computing Technology

The College of Computing Technology (CCT), which is based in Dublin City Centre is an independent college that offer QQI accredited programs at levels 6,7 and 8 in both Information Technology and Business.

Applications for all of their courses are available through the CAO.  Some key points regarding CCT :

·         QQI accredited courses at levels 6, 7 and 8
·         Opportunity for students to enter a level 6 program and progress through to level 7 and level 8
·         Last year All Qualified Applicants were accepted in on level 6 and level 7 programs (5 passes at ordinary level, including mathematics).
·         Tuition fees for 2016 for CAO students are €3,200 per annum.
·         No additional registration or examination fees.
·         Great location, Westmoreland Street,  easy access by bus, Luas and train.
·         Courses scheduled over 3 days per week with classes fixed between 9:30 and 4:30.

RCSI Show “So You Want to Be a Doctor?” is a series which will give students an insight into what life is really like as a doctor. Please click on the link at 6pm on Wednesday 9th Dec and Tuesday 19th January to watch the live broadcast.
 

Viewers will be brought to Beaumont Hospital
on Wednesday 9th December 2015 at 6pm where Dr Emma Tong will detail why she decided to study medicine and how she became a clinical lecturer in Surgery at RCSI. Viewers will be able to see Dr Tong in action running a clinical skills tutorial.

On
Tuesday 19th January 2016 at 6pmProfessor James Paul O’Neill who is an otolaryngologist or ENT surgeon in Beaumont Hospital and RCSI, will explain to viewers his specialty which involving treating illnesses concerned with the ear, nose and throat (ENT).

Throughout the broadcast, students and viewers can also get involved, as a live-streamed question and answer session will take place at the end of each episode in the series. They will address any comments, queries and questions viewers on studying medicine, being a doctor or on what specialties they have seen in the broadcast. Students can send in their comments and questions via Twitter (@RCSI_Irl) and Facebook using #RCSIBeADoc. Alternatively, they can be sent in by email in advance of the broadcast and on the night to beadoc@rcsi.ie.

Level 8 Professional Diploma in Stage Management and Technical Theatre

Trinity's Lir Theatre School Level 8 Professional Diploma in Stage Management and Technical Theatre course trains students for careers in professional theatres and related industries.  This is a TWO year course at Level 8 and is NOT part of CAO. Please apply online here

3rd Level Study in Holland

The Holland Education Consortium, in association with EUNiCAS,  are providing students and their  families the chance to come and learn about life-changing education opportunities in the Netherlands, at an event in DublinLouis Fitzgerald Hotel - Naas Road. Dublin 22... BOOK a spot here
The Consortium consists of eight Dutch universities who work together to promote Dutch higher education. Between them, these universities offer a significant number of English-taught programmes, at undergraduate and postgraduate level. These universities include: University of Groningen, University of Twente, Radboud University, Stenden UAS, Hanze UAS, Hague UAS and HAN UAS. In addition, EUNICAS will be available to give information.
Importantly, Irish students attending these universities [and they are the real experts!], will be avialable to share their experiences.

Better Options Careers Fair - DARE students

Better Options college fair for students with disabilities and specific learning difficulties will take place in DIT Grangegorman on Nov 26th 2015. This is an ideal fair for students looking to find out about courses and support services provided by colleges as well as garner key information on the access routes for those with disabilities.
Many major colleges will be represented in the Exhibition hall and useful seminars will run concurrently.

Choices 2016 is being held on Thursday 26th November from 7.30-9pm in St. Kilian's German School in Clonsekagh.

National Anti-Bullying Website Launched

The National Anti-Bullying website has been launched by the Minister for Education and Skills, Jan O’Sullivan T.D., www.tacklebullying.ie.

The website, which was developed by the National Anti-Bullying Research and Resource Centre (ABC) at Dublin City University, provides information, support and advice for students, teachers and parents on how to recognise and deal with bullying behaviour and allows teenagers to share experiences with their peers online.

Competition with prize of €2,000

‘Let’s Talk About Drugs’ National Youth Media Awards is a competition for young people and is supported by the Department of Health, the HSE, COSC, the Ana Liffey Drug Project, Healthy Ireland and the Drugs.ie website, which is Ireland’s National Drug and Alcohol Information and Support Website.

This annual drugs education competition aims to help students explore and understand various issues relating to drug and alcohol use in Irish society. To enter, students are asked to create either: a short video, an audio podcast, a news article; or a poster on one of the following themes: (a) The hidden harm of alcohol use; (b) The effects of drug use. The age categories for entering are: 12-14; 15-17; 18-21; 22-25.

Trinity's Lir Acting School Audition Workshops

All 6th yrs should be aware that the CAO is now open as of 12.00 today. Until 20th January 2016 it costs €25 to apply, after this date it costs €40. Closing date and time is 17.15, 1st February 2016. Please note ALL restricted courses (medicine and most art, music, drama based courses) must be on your course choice list by February 1st.

The Trinity Maths and Physics Open Day will take place from 10:00 until 15:30, Saturday, 14 November 2015. The day features lectures and tours along with a chance to meet staff and students from both the School of Physics and the School of Mathematics. Cracking the College Code Parents' Information Talk

The CBC Parents' Council have organised a Parents' Information Talk with Catherine O'Connor, education consultant from Trinity College Dublin, to take place on Monday 30th November at 7.30pm in the school hall. The talk is designed to provide insights and practical advice for parents on how to support their child in choosing the right college course and making the most of the college experience. All parents are most welcome, but it may be of particular relevance to 6th year and 5th year parents. The 6th year students will have a parallel talk on Thursday 10th December during school time - more info to follow

The Lir courses - Trinity College Dublin Acting and Theatre School



Applications for the undergraduate courses at The Lir Academy at Trinity College Dublin, have now opened. 

There are three courses available:

1. Foundation Diploma in Acting and Theatre - http://www.thelir.ie/courses/view/foundation-course-in-acting 

2. Professional Diploma in Stage Management and Technical Theatre - http://www.thelir.ie/courses/view/diploma-in-stage-management-and-technical-theatre


All applications can be downloaded from The Lir website and when completed are returned directly to the Academy. We do not go through the CAO system and entry onto the courses is not points based, it is based on talent. Both the stage management and technical theatre and the acting courses are subject to FREE FEES. The foundation diploma in acting and theatre is not.

There are careers in stage management, in sound design, in lighting, in costume, in scenic art and in stage construction. For anyone who has worked on school productions or productions within the community the Professional Diploma in Stage Management and Technical Theatre would be ideal. We do require that students have at least six months experience before starting the course.

The open day for The Lir is Saturday 5th December as part of Trinity’s Open Day. We will have a presence in the drama department at Trinity College Dublin and we will also have tours of The Lir and a presentation by the Director in The Lir during the day.

Any 6th years thinking of applying to Medicine in the UK, Scotland or Northern Ireland or to any course in Oxford or Cambridge must see Ms. O'Connor to apply asap...the closing date is the 15th October. Also, registration to sit the UKCAT (the UK equivalent to the HPAT) for entry to Medicine in UK Universities closes on Tuesday September 22nd. The UKCAT exam can be taken in Ireland in Dublin city. Round two

Yesterday you may or may not have been made a second round offer from the CAO for a course on your list of preferences. Fewer than 3000 offers were made in total so if you were not offered anything this is not out of the ordinary. If you were offered something you can choose between your initial offer and this second choice and you have a week to do so. The deadline for acceptance of the offer is Wednesday 2nd September at 17.15 on www.cao.ie. If you want to to stick with your first round offer you do not have to do anything. If you still have no offer your options are to look at the CAO Available Places list, Direct Entry routes that some colleges may be offering or a PLC place with links on to a course you may like to take up next year. The deadline for accepting first round CAO offers is today at 17.15. If you haven't accepted your offer it is HIGHLY advisable that you do so as you may not be offered anything on Round Two or later. Round Two will issue this Thursday 27th at 6am online and through the post. There are always other options if you're still unhappy like Available Places which you can apply to through your CAO account and Direct Entry courses. Offers - First Round

You should have been able to access your offers since 6am this morning by logging in to your CAO account on www.cao.ie. It is advisable that you accept your first round offer even if you are not happy with it. The deadline for accepting your first round offer is Monday 24th August at 17.15.  Second round offers will be issued next week on Thirsday 27th August from 6am online. There is a possibility you may get offered a course higher on your list and then you can decide to whether you would rather keep your first round place or take up the new offer.

Exam Results and Offers Advice Line

The Examination Helpline 2015, hosted by the National Parents’ Council Post Primary (NPCpp) will open tomorrow, Wednesday12th August to offer advice, information and support to Leaving Certificate students receiving their exam results. 

Those seeking advice, information or reassurance can contact the Helpline on 1800 265 165 and speak to experienced,professionally-trained guidance counsellors.  All queries on third level courses, such as the points system, rechecks, repeats, CAO procedures, SUSI queries, apprenticeships and further training options will be dealt with in a professional and confidential manner.

The opening hours of FREEPHONE HELPLINE 2015 are
Wednesday and Thursday, 12th snd 13th August: 10 a.m- 7 p.m
Friday 14th August: 10am-1pm
Monday and Tuesday, 17th and 18th August: 8am-7pm
Wednesday, 19th August: 8am-1pm

To complement the Freephone Exam 2015 Helpline, Independent.ie will be running an interactive CAO blog on Wednesday August 12 from 10am and on Monday August 17 from 8am,  Members of the Institute of Guidance Counsellors will also be staffing this,  answering all queries and concerns around the results and further and higher education and career options.

Leaving Cert Results Day and Round 1 Offers

Leaving Cert Results Day is this coming Wednesday 12th August and Round 1 Offers are Monday 17th August. I will be available in the school from 9-10.30 this Wednesday if anyone needs anything in relation to their results and potential offers. SUSI - final call for grants


To all 6th yrs who think they might be eligible for a grant... 
> The national student grant awarding body, SUSI (Student Universal Support Ireland), is urging students who have yet to submit their applications for student grant funding for the 2015/2016 academic year to do so now. The deadline for applications is Saturday, August 1st.
> SUSI encourages students to visit its redesigned, and more user-friendly, website www.susi.ie to review information about the eligibility criteria for student grant funding, including its online 'grant eligibility reckoner' where students can quickly and easily self-assess whether they may be entitled to grant. 
> Students are also encouraged to use their own SUSI 'online application tracker', where they can track the progress of their application and confirm that SUSI has received their documentation without having to contact SUSI directly.

Well done to all on getting through the exams! Just a reminder that CAO Change of Mind is still available until Wednesday 1st July at 17.15. Take a look at this link before you change your mind. Remember your genuine order of preference for the course you want is paramount! Don't put something ahead of something else just because it was higher points last year. These tips will help! UL Special Mathematics Entrance Examination 2015

University of Limerick Special Mathematics Entrance Examination 2015

Thursday, 20th August, 2015 (2.30pm-5.30pm)
This examination is for students who achieve sufficient CAO entry points and satisfy all other entrance requirements, but who do not achieve the requisite grade in Mathematics in the Leaving Certificate for Faculty of Science and Engineering undergraduate degrees.  Candidates who pass this special examination are deemed to have satisfied the Mathematics entry requirement.  It will be corrected on a pass/fail basis and no additional points will be awarded.
Application form to be sent together with a non-refundable fee of €40. The application form will be available from UL nearer the Leaving Certificate results. See here for more details

New course in UCD - Financial Mathematics (Science)

UCD have added a new degree called Financial Mathematics to the DN200 Science common entry course. It is within the Mathematical, Physical and Geological Sciences (MPG) option. Financial Mathematics will be available for all students starting the UCD DN200 Science course in September 2015.
It is particularly suitable for students who are interested in a degree in Mathematics and who would like to pursue a career within the financial sector. 6th years - if you applied to the CAO you should receive your statement of application in the post very soon. It is important to check that the course you entered are correct. If you haven't entered any courses as yet you can do so from Tuesday May 5th via the online system at www.cao.ie.
