Thanks to all involved in the careers event last night. Great contributions from UCD, IADT, TCD, DBS, BIMM & CPL, as well as over 25 former students who gave up their time to share information on college courses and careers.

Back to the future

On Monday 29th January there will be a careers fair for all 5th and 6th year students.
Current undergraduate students will be available to discuss college courses (a range of over 30 courses covered) as well as contributions from University departments, I.T.'s and recruitment experts CPL.
The evening begins at 7pm in the hall and will run until approx 8.15.

TY students – apply soon for Engineering Your Future 2018
Applications will open in late January for Engineering Your Future, a week-long, hands-on programme designed to introduce TY students to the exciting and diverse world of engineering.
The annual Transition Year programme is supported by Engineers Ireland’s STEPS programme – a strategic partner of Science Foundation Ireland’s (SFI) Smart Futures initiative – and will be hosted by a number of third-level institutes around Ireland in April/May: DIT, UCD, IT Tallaght and IADT in Dublin; CIT in Cork; IT Carlow; Waterford IT; and IT Sligo.
The programme is designed to give TY students an in-depth understanding of the diversity of engineering at third level and in industry. During the week, students attend interactive talks and presentations; get hands-on experience with group-based activities; visit local industry and meet engineers at various stages in their careers
Participation is limited to between 20 and 40 students at each location. Successful applicants are selected based on a number of factors, including Junior Certificate maths and science results and reasons for seeking a place on the programme. There is a small fee for participating in the programme. (Fees are waived for students from DEIS schools.)

Apprenticeships

Some students more suited to apprenticeships

Some students who enter third-level may be more suited to alternatives such as apprenticeships, according to Minister of State for Higher Education Mary Mitchell O’Connor.

She said: “We must always remember there is more than one way of learning, and some students may be more suited to apprenticeships or to starting their third-level journey in an institute of further education.”

She was speaking at the launch of Education Matters: Ireland’s Yearbook of Education, edited by Irish Times careers analyst Brian Mooney. The book, published by Phyllis Mitchell, is being made free to access online (www.educationmatters.ie) for the first time.

You will be aware of the announcement by Minister for Education and Skills, Richard Bruton, T.D. regarding the phased introduction of two new curriculums for Physical Education in senior cycle. The Department of Education and Skills is planning the phased introduction in September 2018 of:
1. Leaving Certificate Physical Education (optional subject for examination in the Leaving Certificate)
2. The Senior Cycle Physical Education Framework (not for examination).
Phase 1 of the implementation process will involve a small cohort of schools who have the capacity to introduce Physical Education as a Leaving Certificate subject and/or The Senior Cycle Physical
Education.
